Dance Film Sunday at the Rosendale Theater

A Celebration of Pete Seeger's 100th Birthday with Film and Dance: 'Pete & Toshi Get a Camera' and SummerDance on Tour dancers. Sunday 8/11, 2:00 pm, $12/$10 members/$6 kids, at the Rosendale Theatre.

Nearly 60 years ago folksinger Pete Seeger chose not to answer questions in front of the House Un-American Activities Committee and was sentenced to prison for contempt of Congress. Seeger appealed and the sentence was overturned; but the result left Seeger blacklisted. Unable to perform, monitored by the FBI, he decides to buy an old newsreel camera and take up filmmaking. After several years of making small films, Pete and his wife Toshi take the family on an around-the-world trip to film musicians in the most remote corners of the earth. Covering 28 countries in 11 months, they film dance and music showing a global diversity of wonderful sounds, rhythms and tones. Director William Eigen has curated the 16mm, black-and-white home movies and interlaced them with modern-day interviews with the Seegers and their now-adult children.

At the conclusion of the film will be the final performance of The Vanaver Caravan SummerDance on Tour, including company members Joel Hanna and Carla Giudicelli.

A portion of the proceeds of the program will go to support Clearwater
“Part travelogue, part musical odyssey, part ethnocentric dream, 'Pete and Toshi Get a Camera' will take you places you would never have imagined.” Austin Chronicle
